Description
The South Carolina Civil Rights Museum, founded by noted photographer and civil rights participant Cecil J. Williams, seeks an extraordinary Executive Director to help complete and launch its new 10,000-square-foot museum at historic Railroad Corner, opening in 2026.
This is a grant-driven, time-sensitive opportunity for a dynamic leader who can step in ready to raise significant funds and deliver results. The top priority is clear: to generate major funding, build strategic partnerships, and secure long-term sustainability as the Museum transitions into its permanent home.
Key Responsibilities
Lead all fundraising and development efforts to secure recurring and major gifts.
Implement strategic initiatives to expand visibility and impact statewide and nationally.
Oversee staff, programs, operations, and relocation to the new Railroad Corner site.
Build partnerships with universities, cultural institutions, corporations, and communities.
Serve as the Museum’s spokesperson and ambassador to donors and the public.
Requirements
Master’s degree preferred, advanced degree a plus.
Minimum five years of nonprofit or museum leadership, preferably in civil rights or African American history.
Proven success in fundraising and strategic relationship building.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
