Position Summary:
The General Manager – Radio & News Operations is the driving force behind our station’s on-air sound and journalistic impact. Reporting to the COO and CEO—and working in close collaboration with the Chief Content Officer—this role leads all aspects of radio and news programming, from big-picture strategy to daily execution. The General Manager ensures our broadcasts and digital content are compelling, credible, and community-focused, while fostering innovation, operational excellence, and a thriving team culture.
Key Responsibilities:
Vision & Leadership
Set and execute the strategic direction for radio and news in alignment with the organization’s mission and growth goals.
Work hand-in-hand with the COO and CCO to develop engaging, relevant content across platforms.
Inspire and lead diverse teams to create programming that informs, connects, and resonates with audiences.
Operational Excellence
Oversee all radio and newsroom operations, ensuring top-tier quality, efficiency, and compliance with FCC regulations.
Supervise and mentor department heads, fostering collaboration between programming, news, and digital teams.
Partner with technical staff to maintain reliable broadcast operations and pursue technology upgrades.
Content & Editorial Oversight
Safeguard the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness.
Shape programming and editorial direction to reflect the richness and diversity of our community.
Encourage innovative storytelling, audience engagement, and cross-platform integration.
Financial & Administrative
Collaborate with the COO and finance team on budgets, resource allocation, and operational priorities.
Seek out opportunities for revenue growth through sponsorships, underwriting, and special initiatives.
Ensure operational decisions balance budget discipline with creative ambition.
Community & Industry Presence
Serve as a visible ambassador for the station at community events, conferences, and industry gatherings.
Build strong relationships with listeners, donors, community partners, and media peers.
Work with development and marketing teams to promote content and support fundraising.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, broadcasting, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
- 7+ years in leadership roles within radio, news, or public media.
- Proven success managing teams, budgets, and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Deep understanding of FCC rules, newsroom ethics, and public media principles.
- Strong strategic planning, decision-making, and communication skills.
- Comfortable leading in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.
