- Non-Profit Business Development Director
Description
The Non-Profit Business Development Director will play a pivotal role in driving the growth and sustainability of the organization by identifying and securing new funding opportunities, partnerships, and strategic collaborations for Hunkapi Programs Inc, a 501 (C) (3) organization.
This is a new position that will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive business development strategies that align with Hunkapi’s mission and long-term goals. The director will also cultivate relationships with donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and community stakeholders to expand our organization’s reach and impact. This person will report directly to the CEO.
This person will lead Hunkapi’s efforts to diversify revenue streams, including sponsorships, and earned income initiatives, ensuring financial stability and programmatic expansion.
Ultimately, this role is essential in positioning Hunkapi as a leader in its field and enabling it to better serve its community through innovative and sustainable growth strategies.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have strong communication skills to craft compelling proposals and engage effectively with donors and community partners.
- Be a strategic thinker and apply analytical skills to assess opportunities and develop plans that align with Hunkapi’s goals.
- Be curious and exhibit genuine relationship-building skills for cultivating long-term donors and partnerships while expanding Hunkapi’s network.
- Possess proficiency with a CRM system (Hunkapi uses Bloomerang) and diligence in efficient tracking and management of donor information and business development activities.
- Be confident in their leadership skills to help guide staff, board members, volunteers and key stakeholders in organizing and supporting organization-wide initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Drive Strategic Business and Fund Development Growth – Identify and execute innovative fundraising and business development strategies to expand philanthropic engagement and increase revenue.
- Cultivate Key Partnerships – Identify and nurture relationships with donors, corporate partners, foundations, and other community organizations to enhance long-term philanthropic support.
- Inspire a Culture of Philanthropy – Partner with the CEO, Board, and leadership team to foster a community of engaged supporters and champions.
- Collaborate with program and communications teams to align fundraising efforts with Hunkapi’s goals and messaging.
- Manage and report on fundraising and business development metrics, ensuring transparency and accountability to leadership and stakeholders.
- Represent the organization at networking events, conferences, and community meetings to enhance visibility and build strategic alliances.
- Oversee the development of marketing materials and presentations to support business and fund development initiatives.
- Develop and execute an annual giving solicitation plan that includes fundraising strategies to launch various giving opportunities for Hunkapi.
- Serve as lead staff for board and volunteer committee(s) providing training and resources as needed to cultivate, solicit, and steward donor contributions.
About Hunkapi Programs
Hunkapi Programs are located on a 10-acre farm in Scottsdale, Arizona. The name HUNKAPI [hun-kah-pee] is from the Lakota tribe and means: “we are all related."
Hunkapi provides equine-assisted psychotherapy, therapeutic riding and equine-assisted life skills. Each week, Hunkapi serves between 250-300 clients and provides opportunities for 75-100 volunteers. Our Equine-centered programs all have one aim – to use the bond between horse and human as a catalyst for positive growth in the lives of our participants. Our participants come from diverse backgrounds and abilities from as young as 3 years through adulthood. We serve clients with a wide range of diagnoses including, but not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Emotional Disorder, Addiction Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Nonprofit Management, Marketing, or a related field.
- Successful track record and at least 5 years of experience in business development, fundraising, or partnership management within the nonprofit sector.
- Proven track record of successfully securing funding and developing strategic partnerships.
- Strong understanding of nonprofit financial models and fundraising best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical thinking and ability to analyze data.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, Board members, volunteers, community groups, and other related agencies.
- Familiarity with a CRM system and utilization of databases for relationship management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) credential achieved or in process.
- Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams or cross-functional projects.
- Knowledge of digital marketing and social media strategies to support business development.
Working Environment:
- The director is expected to work on-site in an office at Hunkapi Farms.
- The office is located on a farm with expectations of regular interactions with horses, donkeys, pigs, dogs, chickens and other animals of many sizes and temperaments.
- Must be comfortable in an outdoor environment and able to safely traverse multiple ground types – sand, hay, dirt, rocks, cement as well as a variety of structures – stables, arenas, pens, barns, etc.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent Hunkapi, accommodate donor and volunteer availability and attend community events.
Benefits
- This is a full-time, exempt position with competitive compensation of $85,000 - $105,000
- Comprehensive Benefits –Medical, dental, vision begins second month of employment. 401K/Retirement begins the sixth month.

Other Requirements:
- Level one Fingerprint Clearance or ability to obtain and maintain fingerprint clearance.
- To ensure a safe and productive work environment, all employees will undergo drug screening.
- Travel: Valid AZ driver's license, reliable transportation and ability to show proof of registration/insurance.
- Travel within the State of AZ and other potential donor locations will be required and expected to cultivate and steward key donor relationships.
