Seed the Vote is a grassroots, social justice organization mobilizing volunteers to defeat right wing politics by supporting the electoral work of grassroots organizations in swing states and building the long term power of working class communities and communities of color.
Position Overview
Seed the Vote seeks a dynamic, resourceful Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement Manager to join our team. The Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement Manager is in their element developing and implementing successful volunteer recruitment strategies and mobilizing others to join or launch ambitious volunteer recruitment efforts. A natural relationship-builder, they have top-notch communication and supervision skills to build trust and motivate and organize volunteers and other contributors. This position will help lead volunteer engagement and leadership development efforts with Seed the Vote. This is a full-time remote (in-person/remote hybrid if candidate lives in Bay Area) position that works closely with Seed the Vote’s senior staff. The Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement Manager reports directly to the Organizing Director.
Primary Responsibilities
In 2024, we recruited & sent out 5,000 canvassers and managed a team of over 150 supervolunteers. We envision an even larger scale this year.
The person in this position will be expected to build & manage teams of supervolunteers to make all of the following happen:
Recruit volunteers by:
Reaching out to people who volunteered with us in past years to re-engage them in our work in 2026
Devising & conducting outreach strategies for bringing in new people (in partnership with other staff members, such as our communications staff)
Provide potential volunteers with information & support as they decide whether & where they will canvass, including:
Running regular information sessions
Talking with volunteers 1:1
Joining in-person or virtual house parties to give presentations about our program
Provide coaching & support for canvassers to recruit teams of their friends to canvass together (we call these “pods)
Plan & execute virtual and in-person community building events
In consultation with other STV staff, plan & execute political education events
And more!
We are looking for someone who understands and is excited by a big tent approach to organizing - that we welcome in everyone who shares our goal of defeating MAGA, and we support their political development along the way. Our ideal candidate is also comfortable with grassroots fundraising, as this is something we ask all of our volunteers to do. (The person in this role is not required to fundraise, but needs to be enthusiastic about encouraging all of our volunteers to do it).
We are building a small and nimble team, which may require roles to shift and staff members to pitch in to do a variety of types of work. In all duties and responsibilities, this position exercises discretion and independent judgment.
Team supervision and management
Work with the Organizing Director to build the Organizing Department into a team of 3-6 people
Supervise 2-3 staff members to design and lead STV’s volunteer recruitment and engagement strategies
Recruit and supervise a team of volunteer leaders to run information sessions, recruit other volunteers, host events, coach volunteers, and more.
Volunteer Leadership Development
Provide opportunities and develop the capacity of Seed the Vote volunteer leaders to be meaningful contributors to Seed the Vote’s work
Manage recruitment, training, and growth for volunteer leaders to take on higher level roles
Work with the Seed the Vote leadership to design, develop, and manage volunteer leadership roles & structures
Hold volunteer leadership meetings to engage volunteer leaders in Seed the Vote’s work
Volunteer recruitment
Activate prospective volunteers to become involved in field activities through phone calls, relational organizing, virtual and in-person events, and texting.
Co-build distributed and digital strategies to reach out and follow-up with prospective or past volunteers.
Delegate appropriate tasks to volunteer leaders and/or captains.
Provide support, guidance and feedback to volunteers and volunteer leaders
Prepare materials to support volunteer outreach work
Event planning
Plan and manage logistics related to in-person and virtual activities and events for volunteer recruitment and fundraising
Work with other staff members and volunteers to delegate responsibilities of event planning and management
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Manager-level experience in community organizing and/or volunteer programs.
Experience with distributed organizing as a school of thought and an organizing tradition to win campaigns with high levels of public participation, and through deeply empowering volunteers.
Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects.
Highly organized, efficient, and systematic, with strong time management skills.
Self-motivated; ability to drive your own work and proactively communicate with colleagues.
Proven track record of strong judgment and decision-making
High emotional intelligence and grounded leadership skills to foster trust, collaboration and mutual accountability with staff.
Proven commitment to social justice and electoral work to build long term power of working class communities and communities of color.
Ability and comfort to work within tech platforms such as: Slack, AirTable, Mobilize, Action Network, Google Suite, Calendly, Zoom, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
5 years of success leading grassroots organizing, volunteer-led programs, communications, or electoral work.
Physical Demands
Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk, for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation.
Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard and other technology.
Able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids.
Able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in person and to be understood by others.
Able to hear and understand speech at typical levels in person and over the telephone.
Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Ability to reach, stoop, and kneel to operate equipment or arrange supplies.
Work Environment & Length of Assignment
This position may be remote or a remote/in office hybrid. STV has an office in the San Francisco Bay Area, but the employee can live anywhere.
This is a temporary position which will begin in early 2026 and end December 2026.
