Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii (VLSH) seeks an Executive Director to lead a nonprofit legal service organization that provides legal assistance to the low to moderate income community through education, legal advice clinics, brief services, and referrals to pro bono attorneys for direct representation. VLSH was established in 1981 and seeks a talented, highly motivated individual to lead a strong, client-centered organization with a dedicated and passionate staff.

General Responsibilities:

The Executive Director will act as the chief executive of the organization, appointed by and accountable to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will direct the overall operation of the organization in compliance with the VLSH mission, the policies established by the Board of Directors, and the requirements of multiple funding sources.  The Executive Director will be specifically responsible for leading ongoing planning of the organization’s goals, objectives and outcomes; developing and overseeing policies, projects, and structures to implement those goals; ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of legal services to clients; fund development; and budgeting and fiscal management.



Requirements

A. Duties

  1. Leading the organization and its staff.
  2. Guiding the organization’s short-term operations and long-term plans.
  3. Providing advice and assistance to the Board of Directors on the establishment, development, and implementation of policies and priorities.
  4. Attending Board meetings and serving as an ex officio member on all Board of Directors committees.
  5. Financial management of the organization, including the development and implementation of an annual budget. 
  6. Acquiring financial support for the organization and its programs through fundraising, planning and coordination of fundraising events, seeking philanthropic grants, soliciting corporate sponsorships, procuring government support, and seeking donations from individuals and businesses. 
  7. Hiring, supervising, evaluating, and meeting regularly with VLSH staff and interns.
  8. Serving as the public face of the organization and its mission; acting as spokesperson and being an effective ambassador for the organization.
  9. Maintaining the community presence of the organization, including through coordination with the Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA), to educate attorneys and advocate for a culture of and commitment to pro bono work.
  10. Participating in appropriate HSBA, Access to Justice Commission, and American Bar Association committees, as well as other local and national organizations, and establishing contacts and maintaining effective relationships with courts, bar associations, governmental agencies, other community organizations and the press and media.
  11. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Board of Directors.

B. Required Qualifications

A minimum of 5 years working in a supervisory capacity and an in-depth knowledge of management processes.

Financial and accounting skills to manage an organization budget and the ability to develop strategies, budgets, policies and procedures.

Ability to manage staff effectively, including the ability to select, train, motivate and develop employees, delegate responsibilities appropriately, and resolve problems.

Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people of different backgrounds, perspectives, and opinions, and to motivate and inspire community, staff, Board of Directors members, and funders.

J.D. from an accredited law school and a current license to practice law in Hawaii, or a current license to practice in another state plus a commitment to obtain a Hawaii bar license within one year.

C. Desired Qualifications

A strong track record of increasingly responsible administrative and/or supervisory experience. Experience assuring compliance with grant and contract requirements. Experience working with low-income and other vulnerable individuals and communities in Hawaii and a demonstrated commitment to pro bono service, including participation in pro bono related activities. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and cultural competence.
