Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Services (MLKFS) seeks a dynamic, experienced, and passionate leader to help to fulfill its mission to nurture and develop the skills, opportunities, and, spirit of families in Greater Springfield and the surrounding communities. MLKFS fully embraces the vision of the late Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. of the “beloved community.” As a multi-cultural and multi-service agency dedicated to being “Keepers of the Dream,” MLKFS nurtures and empowers the aspirations of individuals, families, and, youth to achieve new realities of peace, social and economic justice, self-determination, self-actualization, and self-sufficiency.

 MLKFS helps this vision come alive through programs that address some of the most pressing needs of the community. This includes after-school literacy-based programming, a family skill-building program, a college readiness academy, health and nutrition services, and a range of other programs and services designed to help our community grow and thrive. With a dedicated board of directors, talented staff, and a corps of highly committed volunteers, we are poised to grow our impact, and we are seeking a leader who will successfully lead the agency forward.

 ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

In accordance with the mission and vision of the MLKFS, the next President/CEO will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors and staff to carry on the organization’s proud record of achievement and commitment to community support and social justice. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing inspirational leadership to the organization to ensure that it continues as a leading champion of families in the Springfield area. 

The President/CEO will oversee MLKFS’s programs and activities, lead the staff team, ensure the organization has the financial resources to thrive, build strategic partnerships and alliances with various stakeholders, and act as the organizational spokesperson. This is a full-time, salaried position that reports to the Board of Directors. 



Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to community programs; minimum of 5 years or experience working in a nonprofit or social service environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience in many, if not all, nonprofit CEO functions, including interfacing with a board of directors, managing an organization's staff and budget, program delivery, resource development/fundraising, and strong communications skills, including public speaking. 
  • Experience in supervising staff and/or contractors.
  • Experience with community engagement skills in an urban setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Springfield community is preferred but not required.
  • Passionate about civil rights, community support and engagement, and the potential for growth and success of families and the community.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic leadership style.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative, flexible work environment and maintain an organizational culture of trust, motivation, and collaboration. 
  • Ability to create a supportive relationship with staff and maintain a culture with clear staff expectations and accountability.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with individuals and organizations at the local and state level. 
  • Good listener, able to connect, communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders including funders, partners, clients, community leaders, and policymakers.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and being the public face of the organization.
  • Highly organized, adaptable, decisive, and consistent. 
  • Ability to keep the mission and bigger picture in focus through day-to-day work and incorporate larger organizational priorities into strategic decision-making.
