Description

The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico seeks a Curator of
Education and Public Programs (working title “Public Programs Manager”) to coordinate and
oversee the Museum’s wide-ranging public programs. Founded in 1932, the Maxwell Museum
has a dynamic program of interpretation and community engagement, producing numerous in-person
and virtual exhibitions and public and educational programs each year. The successful
candidate will join a dedicated team of museum professionals working to reach diverse
audiences within and beyond UNM, and will work with a variety of UNM and external partners
in support of an active program of public engagement that aligns with the Museum’s mission,
vision, and values.
We are seeking an experienced and creative individual to develop new and manage existing
public programs and outreach for the Museum. With the Museum Director and Head of
Interpretation, and in close collaboration with Interpretation and Collection staff and
community partners, the Public Programs Manager will by a key participant in all aspects of
public engagement for the Museum, including but not limited to exhibitions, educational
programs, lectures, workshops, gallery talks, tours and excursions, fundraising events,
newsletters, and web and social media posts. The Public Programs Manager will serve as the
principal liaison for the Museum for media and public constituents. They will support ongoing
efforts to enhance the Museum’s visibility and engagement among the broader UNM
community, especially students. They will support the Director in member and donor
engagement and fund-raising activities and will identify and enhance financial support for the
museum’s public programs. They will collect and analyze data concerning public programs and
oversee and supervise student workers in related activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Manages and implements all public programs and Museum events (lectures, webinars,
fund raisers, gallery talks, tours, exhibit openings, volunteer events. etc.). Develops and
promotes new and existing programs that align with Museum mission, vision and values.
2. Coordinates and oversees implementation of integrated, multi-faceted, communication
plan for the Museum, both within UNM (especially students) and to external audiences.
3. Serves as main point of liaison for internal and external audiences; responds to public
and media requests for information about the Museum; oversees the development of
promotional materials (press releases, advertisements, social media campaigns, etc.);
represent the museum at community and business meetings; produces newsletters,
marketing materials, calendars, and mailings
4. Visitor services: Mentors, trains and supervises student gallery attendants; prepares
visitor list and count records; serves as point of contact and supervisor for City of
Albuquerque job mentor program; prepares fiscal year reports
5. Oversees and/or coordinates the collection, compilation, and analysis of program
activity data and visitor (web and in person) demographic data; develops, writes and
presents statistical and narrative program reports, and applies this data to improve
programs.
6. Actively contributes to museum strategic planning; supports Interpretation division in
defining and implementing goals and objectives and enhancing operations
7. Prepares and monitors budgets, writes and/or facilitates proposal preparation for
external funding, and identifies and secures alternative funding/revenue sources to
support public programs and related activities. Supports the Director in member and
donor cultivation and fund-raising.
8. Mentors students in Museum Studies and other disciplines in areas of public programs,
media outreach and social media use in museums; guest lecture in classes and for
student groups.
9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.



Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• At least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education
requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in anthropology, museum studies, education, or closely related field
• Demonstrated knowledge and background in anthropology
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of museum principles, objectives, and practices
• Demonstrated experience creating, planning, coordinating and implementing in-person and
virtual programs, media activities, and special events
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the evaluation of public programs
• Proven ability to create, compose, and edit written materials; ability to gather data, compile
information, and prepare reports.
• Experience in development and implementation of integrated communication in print,
broadcast, and virtual media.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide
range of colleagues and constituencies in a diverse community.
• Demonstrated record of success in developing, planning, prioritizing, implementing and
evaluating short-and long-range goals, meeting deadlines, and developing project budgets and
projections.
• Experience with membership programs, donor cultivation, and fundraising.
• Experience in recruiting, training, supervising, and motivating student employees and volunteers
within area of specialty.
• Experience in web development and social media; familiarity with Adobe Suite and Microsoft
Office Suite.
