Description
The VacancyWe are recruiting an Executive into our Investor Intelligence function, to be permanently based in our New York representative office at 667 Madison Avenue.
About Macfarlanes
Macfarlanes is a pre-eminent law firm that serves a global client base in Private Capital, Private Wealth, M&A and Disputes. Personal connection, an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to excellence are at the heart of our firm. These values drive our ability to deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients.
We are big enough to undertake the most complex and demanding mandates yet small enough to know each other well and to be agile, adapting to the needs of our clients. We seek to strengthen the firm by recruiting talented people from all backgrounds who want to build long-lasting and impactful careers with us. Our culture is challenging and supportive, creating an environment where individuals can thrive.
What this means for you
Joining Macfarlanes means being part of a collaborative, approachable team who want you to succeed. You'll be encouraged to get involved and recognised for your contribution.
We take your development seriously. Our learning and development programmes are second to none and are designed to help you strengthen your skills.
Above all, you'll be part of a firm where we all work together as part of a cohesive and supportive team, value your efforts and help you to thrive.
The team
The Investor Intelligence function sits within the Macfarlanes Private Capital Solutions group, which provides a range of non-legal services to our private capital clients, complementing the legal advice we deliver across our core practice areas. The Investor Intelligence team works with private capital managers, principally in private credit and private equity, across four pillars of focus: product development, term tracking, target markets and specific investor research. It does so by providing bespoke and tailored insights that link together the commercial and legal aspects of fundraising, including accessing particular geographies, investor sub-sets and understanding market trends, to ultimately help our clients shape their products and fundraising strategies. Recent examples of their published work includes deep-dives into the German insurance market and mapping of the private wealth landscape across the French, UK, German and Italian markets.
The function has a strong and growing track record in London, where it has built deep expertise across a range of investor markets and we are now seeking to grow and replicate this model in New York. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to become an integral part of the team alongside established London colleagues. On a day-to-day basis, the role involves joint projects and shared outputs, contributing to cross-market mandates and co-authoring research that draws on insights from both sides of the Atlantic. The successful candidate will be supported by the Investor Intelligence Lead and the established team in London and will sit within the New York office headed by our former managing partner, Julian Howard. The successful candidate will play a key part in expanding the function's coverage of the US and broader Americas investor landscape while ensuring our clients benefit from a seamlessly integrated, transatlantic service.
The role is expected to commence in Autumn 2026. We are looking for a self-starter who is motivated, entrepreneurial, highly organised and has a genuine interest in private markets. Candidates must have the right to work in the United States.
The role
The role is an ideal platform to build an understanding of the private markets industry and to develop a well-rounded skill set within a genuinely international team.
Key duties will include:
- conducting research into trends that impact fund structuring and fundraising from both a general partner (GP) and a limited partner (LP) perspective, with a particular focus on the US and Americas markets;
- using this research to produce, review and present written analysis in a way that is engaging for the target audience, including clients, prospective clients and the industry press;
- working with our marketing, business development and design team to develop research and thought leadership pieces;
- preparing and maintaining strategic reports for clients on bespoke fundraising questions;
- coordinating with a variety of teams across our core practice areas (e.g. fund formation and sponsor solutions, tax, financial services regulatory, corporate and M&A) to obtain insights and integrate our legal expertise;
- attending conferences and other industry events in the US and internationally as an ambassador of the firm;
- growing and maintaining our client relationship management (CRM) system as we continue to build our US network; and
- developing relationships and credibility with internal and external stakeholders, including building the firm's profile across the US GP and LP community.
This job description encompasses the main duties of the role and is by no means exhaustive. It is anticipated that duties may vary from time to time according to the needs of the function.
The candidate
The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:
- working experience in a finance-related field (e.g. consulting, investment analysis, financial journalism or investor relations);
- high level of attention to detail;
- strong analytical skills, with the ability to develop hypotheses and reach conclusions within tight timeframes;
- strong written skills with the ability to produce precise and thoughtful content (providing examples would be welcomed);
- strong PowerPoint and Excel skills;
- completed or commenced CAIA or CFA qualifications (desirable but not a requirement);
- experience working with market intelligence platforms is a plus;
- familiarity with the US institutional investor landscape; and
- have the right to work in the United States (required).
Macfarlanes is heavily focused on training and development and is open to sponsoring relevant professional qualifications such as CAIA or CFA for the successful individual.
